The School of Philosophy & Culture is one of the two constituent Schools of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The School aspires to become multidisciplinary in the area of philosophical and cultural studies. Presently, it offers Master's and Ph.D. programme in Philosophy. Broad areas for Ph.D. programme are Indian Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Logic, Moral Philosophy and Analytical Philosophy. The School also offers core courses such as Introduction to Logic, Advance Logic and Discourse on Human Virtues as well as various open-elective courses to the B. Tech. students to inculcate analytic and critical attitude in them. The School is encouraged to offer introductory level courses to these students so that they develop an attitude of comprehensive understanding.

Courses:

The School of Philosophy and Culture offers Doctoral (Ph.D.) and Masters (M.A. in Philosophy) courses to candidates selected through entrance examination conducted by the School. It also offers one core course and several elective courses to the Undergraduate (B. Tech.) students.

Doctoral Course:

The School of Philosophy & Culture offers PhD programme broadly in the areas of Indian Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Logic and Moral Philosophy. The objectives of this programme are: the development of the manpower of highly analytical and critical attitude, to cater to the needs of educational, non-educational institutions and R&D organizations, a broad grasp of the fundamental principles of the philosophies developed in different cultural milieu, a deep understanding of the area of specialization, a general awareness of the developments of sciences, and a capacity to learn continually and interact with multidisciplinary groups. Above all, the students should have a capacity for free and objective enquiry, courage and integrity, awareness and sensitivity to the needs and aspirations of society. With these goals in view, the doctoral programme of philosophy is designed which includes courses of study, seminars and dissertation through which a student may develop his/her concepts and intellectual skills.

Eligibility:

A candidate for admission to the Full Time Ph.D. programme must have obtained Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Sciences/ Management/ Humanities and Social Sciences in respective discipline or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 6.75 on a ten point scale OR 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/semesters) where marks are awarded, of any University established by Law for the time being in force. A candidate applying for admission to full time Ph.D. programme must have qualified National level examination such as UGC NET/ CSIR / GATE in concerned discipline or should be sponsored by a reputed organization where he/she is working. However, candidate(s) from Non-Engineering Streams (Science/ Humanities) who are not NET qualified may also apply for admission to full time Ph.D. programme for which they may be considered in case of left over seats. However such candidates shall not be entitled for any Assistance-ship from the University.

For Ph.D. on part time basis, a candidate must have same minimum academic qualifications as required for the admission to full time Ph.D. programme. Such part time admission in the Ph.D. programme will be subject to submission of ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the employer to the University by the candidate.

Required Credits:

A Student will be initially registered for the course work of 12 credits. On successful completion of the course work, the student is required to appear in a comprehensive examination. After passing the comprehensive examination the student will be registered for PhD thesis. The minimum CGPA requirement for the continuation in the programme is 7.5 in a 10 point scale.

M.A. Programme in Philosophy

The School has been offering an MA programme in philosophy from the academic session 2007- 08. The programme incorporates major thoughts of Indian, Western and Continental traditions in its syllabus. It consists of 19 courses spread over 4 semesters; of these 19 courses, 15 courses compulsory, 3 courses elective and 1 dissertation. Among 3 elective courses, at least 2 should be from the courses offered by the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. Each course carries four credits. A student must earn at least 80 credits to obtain Master's degree in Philosophy. An important aspect of the program is that in all areas of philosophy like Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics and Logic etc., the contribution of Indian thinkers is viewed as having the same level of importance as that of the Western thinkers. The curriculum has been designed as per the UGC norms. The requirements of NET and other National and State level competitive examinations have been taken care of. An applicant to the programme should have an undergraduate degree from a recognized University with at least 60% marks. Candidates appearing in the qualifying examination may also apply. They will be required to furnish evidence of having passed the qualifying examination with the required percentage of marks by a date to be announced by the University. Admissions will be made on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination and interview.
