School of Biotechnology at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra organized its 11th Board of studies meeting on 12th and 13th March, 2020 to discuss and deliberate on various academic matters. The meeting was attended by Prof. S.B. Babbar from University of Delhi , Prof. Renu Bharadwaj from Guru Nanak Dev university, Amritsar, Prof. Namrata Sharma from University of Jammu, Prof. B.S. Bhau from Central University of Jammu, as subject external experts in the field of Botany and Faculty members of School of Biotechnology. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Sharda M. Potukuchi, Associate Professor and Head School of Biotechnology.
The board members extensively discussed the syllabi of Integrated B.Sc Honors (Botany) and M.Sc (Botany) prepared by faculty members of school of Biotechnology as per UGC CBCS guidelines. External experts after detailed deliberations suggested some valuable modifications in the syllabi. After taking into consideration the inputs received from all the members and after in-depth deliberations on the matter, syllabi was modified keeping in mind the carrier aspects of the students. Few more agenda items were also discussed in the meeting.
Padamshree Prof. Ravindra Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University interacted with subject external experts and explained them the vision behind introduction of basic biology related courses in the university.
In the end Dr.Sharda M. Potukuchi, Associate Professor and Head School of Biotechnology delivered a formal vote of thanks and expressed deep gratitude to the subject external experts for their valuable contribution in the development of syllabi of new courses to be introduced in SoBT from next academic session.
The proceedings of the meeting were carried by Dr.Shafaq Rasool, Assistant professor, SoBT as Member secretary BoS of SoBT.
A three day Faculty Development Program (05th-07th March 2020) on “Student Induction on Universal Human Values (UHV)”, sponsored by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was successfully concluded at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, J&K.
In the valedictory session, Prof. M Eswaramoorthy, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, SMVDU, welcomed the Chief Guest, and all participants. Mr. Jitender Naurla, Regional Coordinator and Resource Person emphasized to conduct more such workshops on sensitive issues to make students work in the right direction.
Prof. A K Das, Director, DQA and Dr. Surinder Singh, Deputy Medical Officer, SMVDU was the Guests of Honor, of the session, and shared their views on the importance of human values in the present scenario. Dr. Arjun Tyagi, Dr. Kamaldeep, Prof. Rajiv Kumar, and Dr. Rahul Sharma coordinated the FDP.
A participants’ Feedback Session was also conducted where the participants thanked Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University for organizing an FDP on such a relevant theme. They were grateful to the organizers and the resource persons for enlightening them on the importance of human values, and how it will help them to overcome the day-to-day problems in life and society.
SMVDU Katra, MAR 2020. Under academic-industry interation, an industrial visit to the railway tunnel construction site, Bagha (Reasi) was arranged for the first year students of B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU).
Dr. Balbir Singh, Faculty, SMVDU, coordinated the visit, accompanied by the senior faculty members, Dr. Ankush Anand and Dr. Sanjay Mohan Sharma, to the Mega Tunnelling Project in 111 km Katra-Banihal section in Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla New BG railway line-a project undertaken by M/s Patel Engineering Ltd.
Dr. RK Mishra, Head, School of Mechanical Engineering, SMVDU, laid emphasis on learning new technology to equip students for the future challenges. Officials on site provided practical insights to the students about latest machinery being used for the construction of tunnel in tough terrain in the regions.
GSCASH of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University organised a one day Workshop on “Gender Champions for Gender Sensitization and Equality” on 5 March 2020 to mark the occasion of International Women’s Day 2020. At the outset, Dr. Kamni Pathania, Convenor of the Workshop and Chairperson, GSCASH welcomed Prof. Anupama Vohra, and also highlighted the theme and importance of Women’s day.
Prof. Vohra, Nodal Officer, Gender Champions, University of Jammu discussed the importance of Gender Champions in the University. She deliberated at length about the different challenges that women have overcome and carved a niche for them in the society. She emphasised on the need of gender parity at family, educational institutions and workplaces. The students participated with lot of enthusiasm. There were poetry recitations, slogan writing competition and song performances by them.
The event was attended by faculty members, staff and students. Dr. Isha Malhotra, Member GSCASH and co-convenor of the workshop conducted the programme. Dr. Yugal Khajuria, DOS, SMVDU also provided necessary support for the event.
Sumanta Sarathi Sharma, a senior faculty member from the School of Philosophy and Culture at SMVD University Katra has chaired a session as a subject expert in the recently concluded UGC sponsored National Conference on “Socio-Economic & Political Issues in Contemporary India – An Interdisciplinary Discourse” organized by the Department of Humanities at BSSS College (Madhya Pradesh) which is a NAAC Re-accredited Autonomous College under the UGC Scheme with ‘A’ Grade. The session entitled “Ethics, Society and Multilinguism” featured research papers from Linguistics, Political Science, Geography, Literature, etc. where presenters from different parts of the country along with some research scholars from Nigeria participated. Topics like, Global Schooling, Uses of teaching aids, Multicultural aspects, Gandhian Ideology, Open and Distance education for jail inmates along with some Women issues related to silence were deliberated upon with immense rigor and eruditeness. Prof. R.K. Sinha, Padma Shri, and the Honourable Vice Chancellor of SMVD University congratulated the faculty member.

A total of 60 faculty members from different universities and various colleges of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, J&K and Orissa took part in the FDP.
