SMVDU, Katra, 21st June, 18: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra, celebrated 4th International Yoga Day on 21st June 2018. The celebration began with a Yoga Practice Session at 5:45AM in the Fountain Area of the Academic Block. Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Sanjeev Jain, along with the students, faculty and staff members and their wards participated in the session till 7:00AM. Mr. Gurmel, Junior Assistant in the Security Wing of the University and a trained yoga instructor, guided the participants for various yoga postures and meditation techniques. The session included various asanas such as Padmasana, Dandasan, Chakrasana, Dhanurasana, Pashchimottanasana, Sarvangasana, Bhadrasana, Shalabhasana, Vajrasana, Ushtrasana, Bhujangasana, Tadasana, Vrikshasana, Trikonasana, Shavasana, Anulom-Vilom and Bhramari Pranayams. The session concluded with a free laughter and thanks note to the participants. Three prizes are to be declared on the basis of the fineness of the postures of three best performers in the session. Another event of drawing competition on “Yoga and Environment” is scheduled on 18th July 2018. The prizes will be distributed on 15th Aug. 2018. The yoga practice session was coordinated by Dr. Anil Tewari, Head, School of Philosophy & Culture and Nodal Officer, SBSI along with Mr. Sumanta S. Sharma, Faculty Coordinator, NSS.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra in collaboration with the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India is all prepared to promote innovation in science pursuit for inspired research, popularly known as INSPIRE, through organising 13th Inspire Science Internship Camp wef July 9 to 13, 2018. Notably, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University is famous for its research and teaching in the J&K region, and gradually making its place amongst the leading institutes of India, namely IITs, IIMs, and leading state and central universities. Until recently, the university has been ranked among top 100 Engineering Institutions by NIRF 2018, MHRD, Government of India, and significantly included in Times World University Ranking List. Wanchoo, the Coordinator Inspire SMVDU Chapter, the striking feature of the programme is that it does not believe in conducting competitive exams for identification of talent at any level. It believes in and relies on the efficacy of the existing educational structure for identification of talent. Katra, 05 June ‘18. Mr. Ram Krishan, DST INSPIRE Fellow and Research Scholar, School of Mathematics, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra attended the 33rd Annual Conference of The Ramanujan Mathematical Society (ACRMS- 2018) at Delhi University, Delhi wef 1-3 June, 2018 sponsored by Ramanujan Mathematical Society, NBHM, DRDO. During the conference, Mr. Ram Krishan presented a paper entitled “A Note on Essential Norm of Composition Operators from Bergman spaces to Bloch-type spaces” and also got the opportunity to interact with the Emeritus Scientist and eminent professors from University of Botswana, Botswana and from different states of India like Bangalore, INSA Delhi, Chennai, Allahabad, Pune, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Varanasi, etc.Vice-Chancellor, SMVD University, Prof. Sanjeev Jain congratulated Mr. Ram Krishan for attending the 33rd Annual Conference of The Ramanujan Mathematical Society at Delhi University.

SMVDU Katra, 07th June, 18. Prof. V. K. Bhat, Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra visited Yerevan State University, Armenia &Technichal University, Darmstadt, Germany to attend the “Emil Artin International Conference” &“96Th Workshop on General Algebra” respectively during May 27 to June 3, 2018. The Conferences were organized by Yerevan State University, supported by the European Mathematical Society & International Mathematical union and Technical University Darmstadt,respectively. The conferences were attended by leading mathematicians from different countries,chiefly from Europe, Asia, USA, Africa, Middle-East. Research scholars from different universities of Armenia and Germany also attended the conferences. Latest developments in Mathematics were discussed during various sessions and other informal discussions.

Presentations were made in Ringtheory, Lattice Theory, Various types of Algebra, Group Theory, Representation Theory and applications. Prof. Bhat delivered the talks titled “Matrix rings as one sided σ - (S, 1) rings” &“Classical right Quotient ring of a σ - skew Armendariz ring” respectively during the conferences. 

SMVDU Katra, 05thJune,18: Prof. Veerendra K. Mishra, Associate Professor, Dept. of English and Modern European Languages, BansthaliVidyapeeth, delivered lectures on 'Theorizing Theory &Practising Praxis' during Two Week Summer School-cum-FDP, organized by the School of Languages & Literature, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. In his lectures, he discussed about the significance of theoretical underpinnings in research. Drawing upon Metaphysical, Realist and Aesthetic Discourse, Prof. Mishra emphasised upon how they all create an experience to explore the trajectories of life. In this light, he mentioned and deliberated upon numerous classical theories and analysed how the interpretation varies with the passage of time. He also impinged upon concepts like Hermeneutics, Valency of Time, Structure of Feelings, and alike. Prof. Mishra has an expertise in Modernist Literature, Literary theory and Criticism, Translation Studies, Indian Writings in English, ELT and alike.

SMVDU 7th June, 18: Prof. DeepshikhaKotwal, Head, Department of English, Central University Jammu, delivered lectures on Intrinsic relationship between the writer and the writing during a two-week Summer School-cum-FDP wef 28 May-08 June, 2018 at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra. She began with introducing what writing is and why do writers feel the unsatiable need to write. She implored different reasons like egoistic, aesthetic, historical, political etc. behind a writers drive to frame a literary piece of writing. Prof. Kotwal focused on the significant contributions of a writer in the contemporary times who possess the ability to fill the canvas erased from the history with his writing. Further, Prof. Kotwal also deliberated on various challenges faced by the writer to compose an effective literary piece of which the biggest obstruction she concentrated on was how a writer should use the language. According to her, the art of employing an effective language attracts a reader and if a writes fails to achieve his readership, his writing becomes purposeless. The other challenges that she highlighted were the presence of insularity in the writing process, the inculcation of appropriate form and content, the consistence of language etc. Prof. DeepshikhaKotwal is a renowned academician who specializes in Gender and Womens Studies, Victorian fiction, Indian English Writing and New Literature. She has a teaching experience of more than 40 years with various research papers and articles to her credit.

SMVDU Katra, 05 June, 18. With a pledge to save the environment and conserve it for future generation, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra celebrated the World Environment Day on 5th June 2018. On this occasion, a plantation task was organized near the Basohli Hostel. Students, faculty and staff members enthusiastically planted 30 saplings with plans in mind to save earth and the environment. Notably, this year India is the global host of World Environment Day celebrations which has the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The participants took a vow to minimize the use of plastic inside and outside of the campus. The plantation drive was conducted through the Swachchha Bharat Summer Internship (SBSI) and NSS activity. The SMVDU Nodal Officer of SBSI Dr. Anil Tewari and NSS Coordinator Mr. Sumanta Sharma successfully coordinated the program. The drive was concluded with a note of thanks to all participants and the security wing of the university which managed the saplings and other necessary things for the drive.

Stating an example how positive and fruitful interaction between Governors and Vice-Chancellors could produce wonders, President Ram NathKovind onTuesday reminded his recent visit in the month of April to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra at the two-day Conference of Governors here. Incidentally, the President was speaking on how universities with positive energies can achieve academic excellence and encourage their pupils to focus on serious academic research. Further, he said, “Each state university can develop a “Centre for Excellence” in one subject. With this, students can get an institution of eminence to pursue studies in the subject of choice.” Also, the President urged the Governors to convene VC’s meetings regularly so that swift solutions of academic problems and issues can be sorted out fast. Moreover, to improve the effectiveness of such interactions representatives of the state education and finance departments, as well as officials from the HRD Ministry, the UGC and other institutions could be invited. Notably, the President was overwhelmed by the serene and green SMVD University campus, and he was glad to see young enthusiastic students and entrepreneurs goodwill for them. Needless to say, that SMVD University had made an everlasting impression on his mind, and he wanted that other university should follow and make efforts as made by the Jammu-based University.

National Seminar on Adi Shankaracharya begins at SMVD University

SMVDU, Katra, 1stJune, 18. A Two Day National Seminar on “Socio-Cultural Impact of Adi Shankaracharya: A Historical Perspective” jointly organized by Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), New Delhi, in collaboration with the School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC) from 01 June to 02 June 2018 begins at SMVD University. The Chief Guest of the inaugural function was Prof. Nirmal Singh, Speaker, Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly. In his speech, Dr. Singh explained the relevance of Shankaracharya in the present perspective. The Chairperson of the session was Dr. Sanjeev Jain, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, SMVD University who highlighted the importance of Vedic studies in the contemporary world. In the key note addresses, Prof. Rajneesh Kumar Shukla, Member Secretary ICHR and Dr. Balmukund Pandey, Organizing Secretary Akhil Bhartiya Itihaas Sankalan Yojana stressed on the need to demystify Indian history and authenticate findings, which has flecked the greatness of our glorious past including Shakaracharya’s contribution. In addition to this, Prof Arvind P. Jamkhedkar, Chairman ICHR equated Shakaracharya’s reputation with Immanuel Kant in the West. Prof. Baidyanath Labh, Dean Faculty of Arts, University of Jammu, and academic advisor of the seminar, was also present during the inaugural session. Dr. Anil K. Tewari, Head SoPC delivered the vote of thanks to organizers and participants. In this seminar, participants from all over the country will deliberate and discuss on social and cultural issues pertinent to philosophical findings of Adi Shankaracharya in the coming days. The valedictory session of the Seminar is scheduled in the evening session of 02 June 2018.

National Seminar on AdiShankaracharya concludes at SMVD University

Katra, 02 June ‘18. A two-day National Seminar on “Socio-Cultural Impact of Adi Shankaracharya: A Historical Perspective” jointly organized by Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), New Delhi, and School of Philosophy & Culture (SoPC) from 01 June to 02 June 2018 concluded at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra. The Chief Guest of the valedictory function was Shri G.L. Raina, Member, J&KLC who illustrated the importance of Indian philosophy and its lifestyle for sustenance and survival. The Guest of Honour, Shri Ashutosh Bhatnagar, Director, J&KSC, explained the greatness of Shankaracharya both as a social reformer and as a philosopher. Prof. BaidyanathLabh, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Academic Advisor of the Seminar, highlighted the need to examine concepts of Shakaracharya and Indian Philosophy at large from indigenous perspective. Prof. Rajneesh K. Shukla, Member Secretary ICHR explicated the grandness of Shankaracharya with the majestic Indian culture and its splendid civilization. In this seminar, delegates from various parts of the country participated and stressed on the need to embrace and understand the philosophy of AdiShankaracharya from the contemporary perspective. The valedictory session was moderated by Dr. OmjeeUpadhayay, Member, ICHR. The seminar concluded with a Vote of Thanks from Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Member ICHR, New Delhi.
